We all want to be winners, right? We will all be winners if we are simply doing what we were designed to do. This is so obvious: the best Screwdriver is one who behaves like a Screwdriver and is willing to be used by the Master’s Hand to do exactly what it is supposed to do.
Paul explains this principle in Rom 9:1-29.
Rom 9:20 But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?”
Rom 9:21 Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?
If it is so simple, why do we miss it all the time? Let’s unpack the Screwdriver story a little more:
- The Screwdriver is not selfish. It does not have a will of its own.
- If the Screwdriver stays in the Toolbox, it will always be ready for the master to use.
- The Screwdriver has no desire to be praised. Once the job is done e.g. a shelf is screwed onto a wall, the maker gets the praise for a job well done – not the Screwdriver.
- The Screwdriver fulfills the maker’s dreams. He is simply an extension of the maker’s hand.
- A perfect Screwdriver will have a sharp flat tip, just wide enough to perfectly fit into the head of the screw it is intended to turn. If the tip gets worn out, the Screwdriver does not complain when it is pushed against a grinding wheel to be shaped to perfection again.
