Are you battling to Manage someone? Are you frustrated that you have to constantly ‘micro manage’ this person?
Live as You Are Called
I could not find much in the Word of God concerning the relationship between employers and employees but I think the principle God is after is to be a good employee which has little to do with talents but much more with attitudes like obedience, willingness and faithfulness. See 1 Cor 7:17-24
Policing
If you have to ‘micro manage’ him, he is possibly not there for you but most likely only for himself – just to earn a salary.
Remember you appointed this person to help you so they should be a blessing and do their work without supervision, they should not create more work for you by having to check and re-check everything.
You should not be policing him to make sure he is doing his job – you end up being afraid that he will not do the job at all, or afraid that he will make a mistake that will cost you money or cause an embarrassment. He is definitely not a blessing.
Preventing
Do you constantly find yourself having to design new processes to prevent your staff from making mistakes? Are you trying to cater for their lack of training or skills to get the job done without making mistakes, by adding rules?
The border between preventing and policing is very thin. You may start with a preventing attitude because the person has not made a mistake but after a couple of mistakes (even if you explained the rules), you go into policing very quickly.
This person may just need more training but it may also be the wrong person for the job – you should also help him find his 1 Liner and move him to another job if necessary. You may want to try the advice in the next section.
Passion
From your side it means explaining the vision or output that you require and from their side it should be demonstrated as an excitement or passion for the job.
If you ask a person to write you a feedback report every day, you’ll soon discover where they’re at. Specifically ask them to include something positive or a new idea in their report. By this you’ll be able to measure their passion.
Summary
Luk 19:17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’
Luk 19:22 And he said to him, ‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I was an austere man, collecting what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow.
A person with passion will only have to be given the vision and will be able to work without supervision – they will be a blessing and if you continue to cast the vision and training, they will eventually appoint like minded people who will take your company to the next level.
